Israel is using Twitter and YouTube as a PR offensive, running parallel to it’s warfare air offensive against Hamas in Gaza. David Saranga, Israel’s media and public relations consul in New York held a “citizens’ press conference via Twitter (http:www.twitter.com/IsraelConsulate) on December 30th. This press conference was used to solicit questions from users on the virtual conference. The Israeli consulate also has a personal blog site, Facebook page and MySpace account. Additionally, the Israeli army created a YouTube page with videos of their current air and sea operations.
Israel’s use of these web tools parallels efforts by corporations who use social networks to speak directly to the online population, in lieu of filtering their message through newspapers, television and other traditional media outlets.
