The New York Times recently did a great piece exploring the differences between and Everyone has heard of Zagat since it’s been the resource for finding great food for almost 30 years. Yelp is an online company that launched in 2005.

The Times story points out the many advantages that Yelp has – it’s free for users, they cover any business with a street address (Zagat covers mostly restaurants), and they have many more reviews than Zagat. (They’ve also got an iPhone application that allows you to search based on your location).

The result is Yelp’s traffic is over 12 times larger than And it’s growing at a much faster pace. Zagat still likely generates decent revenue by selling subscriptions and printed guides, but with all of Yelp’s advantages it’s only a matter of time before the younger, hungrier Yep swallows them up whole.
